help with "make & make install"

I am using auditor on a HD install, and am trying to update the aircrack suite.

I am told to DL to Dir. "Do: make & make install".

Well....It's not working, and after a few hours of searching here I am.

I have downloaded the .tar to the default "/home/user" I can see It's there, I can click it to the point that I see, and read the "Makefile" I tried a bunch of stuff I found, but I am stumped,

The .tar is called "aircrack-2.2-beta12.tgz" it sits in "/home/user" What do I have to do now ? countless combinations of "tar zxvf<filename>.tar.gz, and ./,and,cd filename, and make, and make install,etc..." Have left me beat down.

Please help, it seems so simple.

compiling packages especially Unix packages is never easy
it's actually a rather subtle art form
need to copy and paste exact error messages

Ummm......For some reason it just worked. I guess I just needed to nOObify myself publicly for it too happen.

I am very impressed with how quickly you helped me out. This stuff gives me the brain pain often, so Im sure I will be back.

Thanks
**Edit** The problem was the extract. When done right I had a file sitting right next to the .tar(Hey...Just like WinRar)
Now I was able run "cd /<filename>" then "make" then "make install"

I got no errors, so I assume it worked.
