help with linux (i have never used before)
 

Sorry for the not so very descriptive title (wich should say linux DISTRO i have never used),

Well basically at school in I.T we were told to research exploits, me and my friend thought of getting back track 2 and well i have never used any form of linux distro before (besides ubuntu, and i dont remeber how it works =\).

well i have myself the BackTrack 2 cd and it boots form the cd fine, but how would i got about installing it to the harddrive DELETING windows?

and another thing how do i extract and install things using the konsole? as i have not worked this out yet =\

First of all, you dont have to delete windows. You can run Linux and Windows under the same partition. Let's say you have Windows on ya PC and want Linux but you DONT want to delete windows. Just follow the instructions on the installing screen then and it will ask you to delete windows or not to delete. In Ubuntu Linux it is pretty easy @ the installation so no worries.

About the console: I dont know that, too. Never used it before but i think it is something like cmd (ms-dos) in windows.

but in this case i do want to delete windows because i am on an old PC that i would like to have linux on, and with Back Track 2 the installer isnt very helpful at all... it just asks where to install from and dir to install too and it makes much to no sence to me. I TRIED reading up on another website about installing it and i tried what it said to no avail so anyone else got any suggestions?

You can also use gparted on the drive and then install your distro. ( google gparted )

the Konsole in most distro is the bash shell (bourne again shell)

I also recommend gparted; can be downloaded as a livecd and burnt to disk.

Extracting from the command line typically used tar. For example, if you need to extract a file that is in your home directory, you'd go into that directory:

cd /home/[username]

and then you untar:

tar -xvvf [filename]

or if the file is gzipped:

tar -xvzf [filename]

These are only some of the available options, of course.
