Help with internet connection in fedora 10 with dell laptop

Hi friends,
I am completely new to linux. You can say, I know virtually nothing about it. But I used to program on C and Python. Lets leave it now. I wanted to try linux so I took radical step. I threw my vista on dell vostro laptop 1500 and installed fedora 10. Now, the problem is in the internet connection. I used to use wireless connection but not I am without it. I tried to do something from my experience with vista and xp but it doesn't work. I am now more than frustrated. I will be really appreciating your help in setting the internet connection from the scratch without assuming any linux knowledge in me.

Thanks for help in advance.

You should mention which card you have in your computer.

gopal.gautam 03-09-2009 05:09 PM

command for finding wlan card

Thanks friend for replying.

I am sorry because this may be the very silly question. Would you please tell the command or the way in fedora 10 to know the type of my network card adaptor?( I have already formatted my windows vista so I cannot find that from there.)

Hi Bert,
I just contacted dell support team and found out that my wireless card is dell 1395 adapter. I am not sure if this is all you mean.
thanks.

What about NDISwrapper? Is your wireless modem compatible with this. I use Fedora 10 and a wireless connection. I used NDISwrapper and then simply used the disc with the windows driver for my wireless modem, you will need to find the driver file itself it will not autodetect it by simply putting in the CD. Mine now works fine

bert07 03-13-2009 11:40 PM

You can download the driver for your card at

http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethe...ver=4401-Linux

It has a help file (readme.txt) with instructions in it.
Hope it works for you.

bert07 03-13-2009 11:45 PM

Sorry that I can not test it myself. I use a b43 driver. You need a b44, as you shall download following the above link.
But I did download it, opened it, and saw the "readme.txt" as well.
All you need to know should be in there.

Success.

I am sorry friends and thanks to all of you for your constant support and reply. I was in a conference for some days and so I had to work more and was not able to get back to work on linux. I am really thankful to all of you, especially Bert and Repo for their help. Now, my internet is working in wireless mode. Thanks guys.
