Check whether your harddisk is partitioned correctly. Choose the link "partitioning" (maybe it is named a little different, look for the link with the partitioning information below) in the installation setup. Your /dev/hda1 should be formatted with reiserFS and mounted on the mount-point /.
If you have bought the SuSE-Distro, registering and calling the SuSE Installation Suppport is always a good idea.

Does your problem fit this?

i doubt so, but thanks anyways ;)
the YaST installation always halts at the formatting, prompting either that /dev/hdXX cannot be formatted or it cannot be mounted to the respective /mnt
Also, when i did run the system repair, it showed that all the partitions have invalid partition tables.

You can better diagnose your system than I can, but I though that was what the article addressed.
The partitioning tool parted, which YaST uses during the installation, may write an incorrect partition table.
Good Luck.

I´ve always partitioned my disk using fdisk (start a system from cd or the old linux on hd if you´ve got one). Then I started the SuSE installation and just used it for the formatting, it always worked without any problems. So maybe you should partition youtr harddisk in advance with fdisk (the linux-version never the windows/dos-programm).
