help with installing a program, using ./configure


hey everyone, i'm very new to linux and i downloaded a small mp3 program, i untared it or whatever you call it, and when i go to the directory and type: ./confgiure, which is what the installation instructions told me to do it comes up with this message:

"Configure: Error: can not find sources in . or ..

any suggestions?

don't laugh, i'm only a newbie

That's wierd...

What program is it? can you give a link? Is that the complete error message?

XMMS should almost certainly come with your distro, and as they practically never update it, you shouldn't need to install from source. Why are you attempting to do that?

XMMS recommends installing from source to fix some problems with some of the dependancy packages that got onto the distribution CDs.

I believe your issue is that your source is placed in a directory that a regular user can't see. "untar" into your home directory as a regular user or "su" to root first.

Make sure you get source from XMMS not a secondary sight, then recompile.
