Help with installation of kpodder?

Hello,

I have been having problems with the installation of this program, and working to resolve them (slowly but surely), and feel I'm very close:

Initially, the ./configure command ended in an error complaining about missing X-includes. Found the package on my distro CDs, spent an evening resolving dependencies, downloading missing rpms and such, and now, the last error I'm getting from ./configure is this:

checking for KDE... configure: error:
in the prefix, you've chosen, are no KDE headers installed. This will fail. So, check this please and use another prefix!

Anyone ever seen this, or can give me some idea of what this means? I am not using any "prefix" (don't yet know what that is), since the instructions for installing kpodder call for a simple "./configure - make - make install" sequence.

Just to clarify, I'm not interested in anything to transfer files to my MP3 device or player, just in a podcast aggregator/client, which I'm told is what kpodder is.

Running Mandiva Free 2007.

Thanks in advance!

It sounds like you have not installed the KDE development files for your distribution. Am I reading your post right? If not, you need to install the KDE-devel packages so that the build system can find kde's header files and correctly link your program to them.

Thanks, Penguiniator (yes, you read my question perfectly), I wasn't sure when I posted the question that the problem had to do with more unresolved dependencies, since it didn't mention any such in the error message.

I managed to resolve them manually (learned a bit about urpmi in the process) and installed kpodder.

Forgive my recent Win32-user mentality, but it seems like an awful lot of software to install just for a simple podcast client: First it was looking for the X-devel includes, then the QT includes and binaries, then the KDE core/devel includes... All the same, good learning experience. Maybe I should have just gone with some command-line utility?

Speaking of urpmi, is this strictly a Mandriva utility? I intend to switch to another distro eventually (probably Debian), so am I correct in assuming urpmi is unknown to any non-Mandriva distro?

Many thanks!

P.S: Anyone searching this forum for install questions for kpodder: Google up the packages that ./configure is reporting as missing, or try rpm.pbone.net and search for them there. Install the packages one by one if you have to, then ./configure will report the configuration is good and will ask you to proceed with the make.
