help with hda partitions
 

Hello folks
I will upgrade my system to Mandrake 9.2 and I need help with repartitioning the hard disk.

My Red Hat now is partitioned as
hda1 --> windows
hda2 --> /boot
hda3 --> / (These are vfat now)

I wanna change it to
hda1 --> windows 10 gig
hda2 --> hda5 --> / 1 gig
hda6 --> /boot 1 gig
hda7 --> swap 128 mb
hda8 --> /usr 3 gig
hda3 --> /home 1 gig
hda4 --> empty 4 gig I will use this partition as a shared partition later, and most of my documents will be in it, so I will not use /home much.

And I want all to be in vfat filesystem.

Any idea how I can tell DrakX to do it? And what do you think of the numbers?

Select expert install mode and then you can create any and all partitions to your hearts desire.

BTW it would be better to use a native linux filesystem instead of vfat for the install. I would only use a vfat partition to share data with windows. One of the many journaling filesystems like ext3 or reiserfs can recover from crashes better and do not have the fragmentation problems of FAT32 filesystem.

/boot only needs to be 100mb max.
Depending on the applications and the amount of RAM you have installed will determing swap partition size. If you have lots of RAM and do not run a heavy server environment then 128mb is probably good enough. If not then you could up it to 512+.

The partition for that other OS is taking up a lot of space... I have not used it seriously since 1999. Perhaps you do not need it either. You can copy files you need from one partition to another and then put all that space to use.

This ext3 sounds good I must say. I will need Windoze and this IE for some more time since I will install Linux on a laptop and I will need the internet quite a lot till my dear Mandrake and even more dear modem (you know, it's elder and had better be respected) can finally get acquinted. Isn't this to-want-and-to-achieve thing thrilling like the blowing wind? ;)
