Help with Gaim please!

I am running Red Hat 9 with KDE desktop. I am trying to use GAIM as my IM. When I try to logon I get the error "...unable to signon: Protocol not supported." The version of Gaim I am using is 0.59.8. I am tring to login with my MSN messenger account. What do I need to do? And please be specific. I am definitely a newbie but willing to learn.

Thanks!

You could try upgrading, the current version is 0.74.

Mikhail_16 01-26-2004 07:22 PM

its definetely the outdated version, the current one is 0.75 really current now. download it from gaim.sourceforge.net

msn recently changed thier login protocol...you need to update your gaim to the new version...

umm well not to be obvious but you could go to Gaim's website and read the FAQs. They have information on just how to handle your problem.

you might want to try amsn

amsn.sourceforge.com

there is no installationg just download it and run ./amsn from extracted DIR

i like it cuz it tells you when you have new email from that shitty site hotmail lol and it looks alot like the msn for windows

I have downloaded the newest version to my tmp directory. What do I need to do to upgrade the existing version on my machine?

Dunedain 01-27-2004 01:33 PM

probably just running the rpm.. Or did you download the tar? If it's the tar the only thing I can help you with is this: "man tar" and "tar --help"

the rpm is easier.. "rpm -i <filename>" if there are problems read "man rpm" or just type in "rpm --help"

Pretty straightforward.

Definitely just download the rpm, not the source file. You seem unfamiliar with this, so once you have that, make sure you are the super user (aka root) and type:

rpm -Uvh gaim.(versionnumber).rpm

Personally, I think gaim is great, because you can use it for all of your instant messenger accounts.

again, make sure you do -Uvh, not -ivh. The "U" is for updating the program, while the "i" is for installing the program for the first time. Everything I've read about rpm on RedHat tells you to just always use the -Uvh, because it will work every time.

Hi

I have the latest gaim (0.75) but I still get the login protocol failure when I try to login to MSN. Any thoughts?

Have you read the 'MSN Protocol' part of the gaim.sf.net FAQ ?
Perhaps you can find an explanation to your problem (a misconfigured compilation?)...

Yes - I looked at that page, and all they said was to get the latest version, which I have.

It's working now. I had rebooted and tried again. A Windows thing. Happy now.

Cheers

Geoff
