Help with Desktop environment

Hello Everyone -

I am a linux newbie here running Fedora Core 4.

This is the distribution that I am running if it matters:

Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4 #1 Thu Jun 2 22:55:56 EDT 2005 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

Here are my basic questions:

1. I *thought * I had installed everything from the CD. When I boot, the window manager (desktop manager?) is really crappy. I mean, it is like a clock and then a terminal. The resolution is 800x600 I think. How do I change this to something "cool" looking? I've heard of "GNOME" and "KDE" and I even went as far as to check out my /etc/sysconfig/desktop file, but there is no file. Should I create one? How do I change the resolution?

2. How do I *tell* which options I have for window managers? I mean, how do I know if I've really installed "GNOME" and "KDE"?

3. How do I know (command line?) which window manager I am running. It just shows a terminal and a clock and all of the options are when I right click. I had hoped it would at least resemble windows. I've seen some redhat stuff that had a start button and cool icons. How come mine looks bad?

Thanks,

if you have to right click to get "options" or menu items than it sounds like either fluxbox, blackbox, or something like that. heres what you can do. Log out "right click and hold than go down to exit or log out. once logged out you should see a place to type name and password also you should see session. click session and choose either kde or gnome ( i perfer gnome) anyway after that sign in it will than ask you if you want to make this default click yes than there you are what ever one you choose will start now everytime when you log in from login screen the default desktop that you choose will start.

this sounds like TWM (tab window manager)............you might need to edit the /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc file to startkde ..........

there might be a .xinitrc file in your ~/home/ dir ..........
