help to uninstall ubunto
 

hi i ordered a ubunto cd and never thought it would have no way of ever uninstaling - now my kids want windows as well for their homework and I need to load windows 7. I have very limited pc knowledge so would really appreciate an idiots guide to remove ubunto. please help me. no other operating system is on the pc.

1) Put in the Windows 7 CD. (Make sure that either the BIOS or Boot Order is set to boot from the CD first.)

2) Reboot.

thanks for the reply - will try again but doing this hit problems re partitioning the disk which i do not know how to do. is their no auto uninstall? ubunto looks good and has worked fine but now seems very unfriendly if u want to remove it.

why can't they do their homework on Ubuntu. There is nothing you can do on Windows that you can't do in Linux. Except some games written for Windows.

Just let the windows installer use the entire disk.
Because it's their choice to use windows and not linux.

why do people expect Linux distros to have uninstallers?? Does any variant of Windows ever have one??

Provided the computer has enough memory (RAM) I'd suggest to install Windows as a virtual machine on Ubuntu with Virtualbox. The advantage is that you can easily make snapshots and reinstall Windows when your kids have caught some viruses.

In my opinion Win XP would be good in such a case.

BTW: if you feel not able to install Windows, you should hire a Computer-expert and let him/her do this. If you find someone who is familiar with both Windows and Linux, he/she will guide you to the best solution.

You can use a live CD (gparted) and delete (format ) ubuntu partition partitions.

hi thanks for all replies - 'let the windows installer use the whole disk' ?? - i presume it needs to be repartitioned first using gparted or is that not necessary somehow? is there an easy way to achieve this?

if not please - if i use gparted which i have downloaded how precisely do i delete (format) the ubunto partition and then instal windows 7??

if this is beyond me perhaps virtualbox is the way to go but i would prefer to install window 7 properly if possible and then perhaps add ubunto as guest op sys at a later date

Just start with the windows disk. When the partitioning screen comes up click advanced button. Highlight each partition and select delete. When you are done you will have one partition. Select that and format it. Windows installer will take over from there.

You might find that the Windows 7 partitioner is unable to see any space on the hard drive, as the OP probably used ext2/3/4.

Go to http://gparted.sourceforge.net and download a gparted iso.
Burn the gparted iso to a CD or a USB drive (documented all over the internet)
Boot from the CD or USB drive and follow the on-screen instructions.

Once the gparted desktop shows up, it should auto-load gparted within a few seconds. This will automatically scan for your hard drive, and show its partition table.

Right click on each item in the list and select delete.
Click Apply.

Once this has finished, turn off the computer, removing the USB drive or CD, and insert the Windows 7 installation CD.
Follow the on screen instructions.

No, it will see them. I have used Win 7 disk to overwrite before. No issues.
