Hi,this is my second question in LQ.I want to instal ubuntu on my pc.
My pc specs
Intel celeron D single core 2.66GHz
1.512 Gb RAM
Ati radeonx300/x550/x1050 series 128mb
400W PSU
asrock dual775-VSTA Motherboard
I want to get Ubuntu ,but i have windows 7 ,but it runs slow and a bit laggy .does running ubuntu 14.04.3 makes old pc faster? Who is better for gaming,internet surfing and small web page making? Yes,i have old hardware ,but i am 15 and soon i will finish elementary school in Latvia and buy new pc about 600-1500 euro and till that i want make old system faster and better.tnx for support.

I'd say the best way to find out is to try it. The beauty of the Linux world means it costs you nothing but your time. Download the 14.04 iso and burn a CD or USB stick to install it. If it is too "laggy" for your taste then try one of the distros designed for machines with low specs. Puppy Linux, Lubuntu, PCLinuxOS come to mind. There's loads to choose from.

Be aware that running from the liveCD will be slower than the final installed version due to having to read the CD/DVD. Ubuntu may be marginal on that hardware - as suggested, maybe also try lubuntu or xubuntu which have GUI desktops that are not so demanding of the hardware.

I am runing it crom usb flash drive and it still is slow. Wop now i have ubuntu on pc, but i don't know i will instal it today.. tnx for support and good day!!!

Ok. I tested ubuntu, but when i want to open something it do nothing.. Mouse is moving, but can't do anything. Now i booted old windows 7.do i have to instal to use a t normaly? Like every day pc and not just test it and even in test it don't do anything. I have 2.0usb and 2.0 usb flash maybe that is two slow

No, you should be able to do everything normally from a live CD/USB. USB2 is fine.
We need more detail if we are to try and help diagnose any issues.

I know issue is ram and cpu.. It is two slow. I do all as usual boot from usb and when i do it it gives me Ubuntu gui and i can move mouse, but can't click anywhere and top of the gui empty, no buttons and no menus and can't click to anything on desktop. Even not instalation icon. I will download several other distros and test them two. Can you tell me any good distros. But there are several things:need java plugin access to browser to get working internet games, make small web pages and play windows games(With wine or some other software) tnx for help and support!

Sounds like a bad download, did you check it(?).

You should be able to run most Linux distros on a 2.66GHz with 1.5GB ram, so I don't think that is the problem.

I will try download different version of Ubuntu or download debian, slackware, openSUSE or Fedora. Tnx for help again.

For someone new to Linux, you might want to shy away from Slackware and Debian. Both involve a lot of CLI and on the fly knowhow that a new user probably doesn't have.

You're on the right track with Ubuntu, openSUSE, and Fedora.

If you want to verify your download to make sure nothing got corrupted, this tool looks like a good way under Windows.

Even apart from any problems with the copy of Ubuntu, I don't think that Ubuntu is a good idea on that computer. Open SUSE will be worse. Debian and Fedora are not for beginners.

Get Linux Mint - in the Mate version, not the Cinnamon one. Make sure the file is OK with this little tool

I will try linux mint mate version, but can it be tested before instaling? But why not Ubuntu? I readed ubuntu is user friendly and is a good start for newbies, but i am newbie and i will try to do what pro's say

And i have windows 7 who's minimum is two cores, but i have one core and it is stable, but not very fast i have big page file and no theme, no transperen efects and aero theme. But i can play crysis on minimum for all settings and forced 640x480 reselution. If windows 7 can run on that, then most of linuxes can.

That depends. From what you are describing, the "bigger, heavier" distributions aren't going to run well on your hardware. They are geared for the newer systems.

My suggestion would be to try a lightweight distribution. such as Lubuntu, Zorin OS 9 Lite or AntiX and see how they work.
