Help SlimFast my Linux box!

To linux masters out there, Thanks in advance for your help!
I have a RH8 box (400MHz, 128MB, 4G) and want to use it exclusively for web browsing only! I have it up and running, working just fine but slow. Now I want to tweak it and take off all things that aren't necessary to browsing the internet and make it faster. Better yet, I don't even want Xwindows or WM or Desktop if they can be avoided with a low resource required browser! So how do I go about doing this? My research for the past couple of days turned up too little to start!

Well, the first thing to do would be to turn off all the services you don't need. Go through your start-up scripts and comment out everything that is not absolutely required. If you want to surf with a character based browser like Lynx, then you don't need X. However, if you want the pictures and such, then you will need X. However, you could us a lightweight window manager such as Fluxbox to reduce the strain on your system.

Is there a website that lists what is required to start the system and what services do what? BTW, where are the start-up scripts located? Thanks!

Simply Linux is a decent site to read through. The pop-ups are a bit annoying, but the information is good. Pay particular attention to the sections on removing uneccesary services and tools.

A much easier method than going through and deleting all services and unessacary processes is to just switch distros. For a pure server computernot being used as a desktop i would go get vector linux, its iso is only about 250mb.
