Unhappy Help On Installation Required

Firstly Please let me apologise If You have all heard this before.

Ok I am a complete Newbie.

I am attempting to install SuSe Office Desktop.

Everything appears fine until I log in.
Actually it's the Log-in that appears wrong.
During installation my monitor appears to work perfectly as does my mouse.
2.3GHz Celeron, 512MB Ram, 80GB & 120GB HDD, IM845GL Motherboard, GeForce4 MX440 64MB Ram, Proview 586 15" TFT Monitor.
After Installation the Sreen appears to reduce resolution down to 600x400 and my Trackball dosen't work.
I have tried the installation several times but to no avail, I just do not get the options for setting Graphics.

I have probably described this really badly and have made a fundamental error.
But I need help!!!

I am prepared for Ritual Public Humiliation - but please help.

GibletBoy

Look into your /var/log/XFree86.0.log. All error messages, monitor or video configuration problems should be mentioned inside. If you have problems - post it here and someone will try to tell you what to do.

Thanks Mara
When I try to access these files logged in as 'User' or Root I get the following

-bash: /var/log/XFree86.0.log: Permission denied

When trying to run

XFree86 I get

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send the full server output, not just the last messages.
Please report problems to feedback@suse.de.

What do I do now?

Will be back tomorrow.

Do as the error message suggests - remove /tmp/.X0-lock nad then run 'startx' again.

Thanks for your help so far.

I did as suggested and typed in startx at prompt and this is what I got:

_XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeALLCOTSServerListeners: server already running

Fatal server error:
Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X sever isn't already running

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send the full server output, not just the last messages.
This can be found in the log file "/var/log/XFree86.0.log".
Please report problems to feedback@suse.de

Xlib:connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Invalid XDM-AUTHORIZATION-1 key (failed key comparison) giving up.
/usr/X11R6/bin/xinit4: unable to connect to X server
/usr/X11R6/bin/xinit4: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

I cannot send the reports to Suse because I can't get the thing running.

Again Many Thanks for Your Help Mara

Progress
I now have a functioning Trackball and Monitor.
How can I be sure that all the settings will be saved?

Ok
Anyone, I re-installed and the display and Trackball were fine.
Set up Staroffice and Updated Online.
Trackball stopped working.
Restarted machine, Ctl-Alt-Del and chose Reboot.
Now display has reverted to 600X400 or something and trackball don't work.
Help!!

Many Thanks in advance.
