Help needed with hdmi hookup

I know you guys need certain information, if you could post the commands I need to use to get all the required information i'd really appreciate it, but heres my problem.

I'm trying to get my laptop to play movies on my tv using an hdmi to hdmi cable, at first it showed up as a blank black screen on my tv when I plugged in.

After reading some things online I tried a few and finally got it to where the tv was showing up what my laptop load up screen would (the maroon ubuntu screen upon startup) and then it would stay on that screen.

If anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it, and as I stated above if you need information, if you could tell me how I would get it, I would greatfully post it for you, thanks in advance!

Well, we need BASICS to start with...just telling us it's a laptop connected to a TV gives us nothing to go on. What KIND (brand/model?) of laptop? Which version/distro of Linux are you using? What kind of video card does the laptop have?

From there, we can try to help, or give you commands to run.

O.k. so once you have the maroon screen from Ubuntu on the TV, launch the movie player with the video you want to watch. Grab the bar of the the video player and drag it to the screen displaying on the TV. Click the full screen option on the movie player and that should get you watching movies from your laptop to your TV.

Other alternative will be to connect your laptop to the TV and go to the display settings on your laptop and select to turn off the laptop screen and use the external monitor only (Tv screen)

Good luck to you, and let us know if that works
