Help needed to built in career as a linux admin
 

hi,
i want to bulid my career as a linux/unix administrator right away aim working in MNC and just started my professional so anyone can guide or show me the exact for linux/unix admin .is it the right way for me to go for a RHCE/RHCSA.

Do you have any experience with any Linux Distro ?

If you are new to Linux, I would suggest you to pick up some basic Linux books and download freely available linux distros (such as Ubuntu/Debian, Fedora , Mint) and start working on it.

Yes if you are interested in linux you can do RHCE course anytime soon, but I don't think that any company will take you directly on Linux Administrator post.

Well, I'm RHCE Certified and spent 1 year in industry to become Linux Administrator. Company can hire you as a Linux System Engineer if not experienced at all, and not directly as Linux Administrator. And hope you know well what the role of Linux Administrator is.

The role of Linux System Administrator or Linux Server Administrator is to look into all the linux systems and servers in their domain.

Here are some of the working of System Administrator:
User administration (setup and maintaining account)
Maintaining system
Verify that peripherals are working properly
Quickly arrange repair for hardware in occasion of hardware failure
Monitor system performance
Create file systems
Install software
Create a backup and recover policy
Monitor network communication
Update system as soon as new version of OS and application software comes out
Implement the policies for the use of the computer system and network
Setup security policies for users. A sysadmin must have a strong grasp of computer security


If you will google about Linux System Administrator you will come to know more about that.

I started personally my job career as a SW developper (on CAD system); then after 2..3 years became the admninistrator of the CAD system.
Personally, I prefer the SW development.. because I made on my own
a) define specification for SW application (on CAD system)
b) made/wrote specification and asked different supplier for writing the complete SW
b.1) made in parallel prototype SW (10..20% of the final SW content) for having a better feeling what has to be done
c) bought for few 100 k Euros the SW to supplier companies
d) traned users for the SW
e) helped users in using/implementing/improving the SW
For me, system administration was a bit boring.. and I wanted a much deeper creativity in developping SW creating new things (3D surfacse in the light simulation and development; make easier new development works, simulate light out of new bulbs and new surfaces; ..).
bUT WHATEVER i HAVE DONE, OTHER COLLEAGUES where happy in being a system administrator.

I am working on linux machines and company designated me as a system admin but iam not working at all any kind of work as you spacified that roles and responsibilties of linux admin.my work is kind of core technical work for e.g creating and running shell scripts,and i use some not much commands as per the requirement and monitoring some kind of activities...
it seems that iam not working as a linux/system admin so still should i go for the linux admin and if i go further then my job exprience help me in the future........

First of all, relax.

Now, answer to this confusion of yours is, without any previous REAL experience of admins, no company would take the risk of hiring you on a REAL System Administrator's role from the start.
There are levels of System Admin's like L1/L2/L3 and so on. Dig Google for extra details. In the start of your career what you are doing in your company is almost perfect, you started as a Jr. admin or an Engineer and that's what it's supposed to be. Would suggest you to excel in the Unix/Linux internals and shell scripting/automating. It's gonna pay you in long term on the way of being a good Linux/Unix admin.

There are already two good advises given above, read them carefully. System admin's may seem boring and monotonous but it's a heavy responsibility when you're working in a huge data-center environment.

you must have good technical analytical as well as handsome experience , as Satyaveer suggested you above gain good knowledge about linux and try for it .

For now you can continue with your current job if you want to and later on if you get good opportunity for Linux Administrator or some higher position then go for it. And talking about your job experience, later on with the help of experience may be you can get a good job of Linux Administrator in a good company. So, no need to worry a lot in this matter. Be cool and keep on doing your good work and increase your knowledge and skills as much you can...
