Help mounting harddrive after booting from cd

I'm trying to correct a problem I have with my root passwd. I have booted my Red Hat 6.1 box (don't laugh, it still works great!) with a cool-linux recovery cd. I'm trying to mount the root filesystem of the box so I can go into it and make a change to my /etc/passwd file. Being a newbie, I can't seem to figure out how to mount the file system off the hard drive, once I've booted from the cd.

It depends on your hardware setup - to see your partitions try:
fdisk -l /dev/hda

To mount:
mount /dev/hdaX /mnt/

You may want to forget the recovery disk though and just boot up in single user mode.

O.K I hit 'c' at start up and tried to enter "single". My box told me there was no such image. I hit tab and the only thing it listed was "linux". Did I do this correctly?

You need to append " single" to the kernel image line. Do not replace it.
