for some reasons i had to remove the linux hard and replace it with anohter hard and put it back again

but i found that niether the linux want to boot or windows

both of them was lost

cos the mbr config was changed

i am now installed linux again

but i can't install window
thje system refuse to resd from a startup floopy for window
or from the cd of windows


can anyone telll me how shall i reset the mbr

i have tried to boot from a floppy to go to dos and do fdisk /mbr but as i said i can't boot from floppy or cdrom

can anyone help me plz

to boot from a floppy, you must have a valid bootdisk, it sounds like you do, the only other thing you need to do is set your BIOS to boot from the floppy before the hard drive. then reboot with the bootdisk in the drive, and hey presto. that fdisk /mbr thing will just overwrite your mbr with a DOS/Windows only MBR, you will need to install linux after windows unless you have a linux bootdisk, to avoid your dual boot stylee mbr getting wiped out. remember to make said linux bootdisk during your linux install.

I am sure somebody else will be able to pint out some minor flaw in what i have to say, but i am just trying to help, and that is the extent of what i can tell you...

Calum is completely correct. You need to install Windows first, then Linux. Windows doesn't want to make it easy for you to load other OSes, so it will overwrite the MBR. Linux will also overwrite the MBR, if you let it, and use Lilo or Grub to select your OS.

1) Set your computer to boot first from either the floppy drive or the CD drive, whichever the BIOS will permit.

2) Put your Windows install diskette into the floppy, or the Windows CD into the CD drive and reboot. Completely install Windows.

3) Put your Linux install diskette into the floppy, or the Linux CD into the CD drive and reboot. Completely install Linux. Where it asks you to install Lilo or Grub (I like Grub, but Lilo is good, to, if you prefer), make sure that it installs on the MBR and that it also recognizes Windows. Make your Linux emergency boot disk, and you are done

4) Set your computer to to boot first from the harddrive in the BIOS.

You are as good as new :D !!

I am afraid I am not real sure what you are asking for. But, if's it all you want to do is set the MBR back to normal. Once I installed Windows, and linux on two seperate drives. I then decided to delete windows. BUT when I would boot up my machine, it still came up w/ the linux bootloader. So, what i ended up doing, was downloading EZ-drive, and it has an option in there to ... um ... i think it said to reset the MBR ... or something like that. But I did that ... and it booted normally w/o the bootloader. Another thing I had problems w/ was getting rid of the linux partitions on my drive. LOL ... there may be an easier way to delete the partitions, but I just loaded EZ-Drive, then did a low level format ... that did the trick. But Microsoft's FDISK wouldn't work. Anyways, I hope this helps.

from my words i am sure that they shows that i mean that my computer refuse to read anything for windows either floppy or cd

but it read anything for linux

i solved it by using the command chroot and removing my lilo config from master boot record

If I remember correctly windows must be loaded in the first (300?) cylinders of a HD otherwise it will refuse to run, so if you made the unfortunate mistake of installing linux first (at least with out allotting windows it's proper partition on the beginning of the drive), you will have to start over and load windows first.
