Help me to stop X server


Hi .. Plz somebody help to stop the x server in mandrake 10 to install the nvidia drivers thx xD

as root, edit your /etc/inittab file. there is a line that starts with

ido:5:something-something (not at computer now, sorry can't tell you exact)

and change the 5 to a three. Now, just reboot and you'll get a command line. Once done with the nvidia install, yoiu'll have to change it back. To do this, as root, use this command:

vi /etc/inittab

this is the vi editor. If you're not familiar with it, it's simple enough for this application. Using the arrow keys, find the 3 that you changed from a 5. put the cursor on it, hit "r" on the keybord, then hit 5, then then type :wq and hit enter.

Reboot.

edit: notice above you change it back to 5, I originally said 3 again
