help me please : system not booting


i increased the disk space in linux partition using partition magic8.0....i have red hat 9 n win 98...then as soon as i rebooted my pc it wrote LI n hung n it is happening whenever i am booting my pc.i am not able to boot into either of linux or windows.somebody plz tell me exactly how to rescue my os
please help me

Works just like magic

Maybe you can put in a rescue disk and install the boot loader again. Which bootloader was it, grub, lilo, or what? Did you make a boot floppy for your linux system?

its definetaly LILO because he said:

i have seen that problem before on a machine that i screwed around with, it was hardware related in my case...so sorry i have no fix..cause the machine will not boot to the day no matter what i do to it :P

it was lilo but i am havin problems rescuing the boot loader....i put in disc1 n type linux rescue then go to shell prompt,etcand type loader.but it gets stuck there
what to do...can u tell me the xact steps

instead of cd /mnt chroot can i do chroot /mnt/sysimage
and btw can u tell me what is the best way to partitionhard drives from linux while installation.i tried to make a windows partition from free space givin vfat azs file system..then it asked fro a mount point

I always use fdisk to make partitions. Are you using partion magic?

i used disk druid .......when i tried formatting free space as vfat fs it asked for a mnt point.what should i give the mnt point as...there is no option as /vfat or /windows

maybe /mnt/something?

you can use "mkdosfs" to create vfat filesystems also.
