HELP ME, please. Frustration is getting to obscene levels!

SO, I installed Linux today about 5 hours ago and I have not been able to do anything productive since. I am on a Asus Chromebox m004u and I cannot download anything. I am stuck on the desktop that was installed with the linux program I installed. I am seriously dejected and having bad thoughts. What am I doing wrong???

I would love to be more detailed but I just don't know where I am actually at on linux, except for a desktop theme that is gray and melancholy. Any info at this point would be helpful.

thank you much,
Kale420

You might start by telling us which Linux distribution (e.g. RHEL, CentOS, Fedora, Ubuntu, Slackware) and which version of the distribution you installed.

Might also help if you would tell us what you are trying to download and from where (ie. in a browser, using an ftp program, ...)?

I have made a search on google, and this does not seem to be a straight-forward install:

Cheers!

I see that you are trying to use Ubuntu on the Chromebox. This is do-able, but it's difficult to know what happened to you from your description of a grey screen! Have a look at these guide to installation and see if you can spot where you went wrong

If you can't see the problem, then tell us
1. Did the installation complete?
2. What do see when you reboot? Does it ask you to log-in? If so, what do you get next? Does it look like the screen-shots here, and if not, what's different?

Lastly, You might want to edit your thread title to be more relevant- descriptive of the problem you are having. Because frankly. Your thread title pushes away responses. I own a ChromeBook myself.

http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/...Ask_a_Question

Mention if you used Crouton install instructions with a link to install instructions or if you are running off of external sd card with a seabios install.

Lastly. After every linux install I do.

I open a linux terminal with apt based distros like Ubuntu and do first

Code:

sudo apt-get update
before trying to install anything from Ubuntus synaptic package manager or Ubuntu software center. That command connects your system/install to Ubuntu repositories and downloads the latest version of application installs available that you can install later on. That might be the only step you have missed.

A serious thank you!

That's about how bad it was and how unknowing I am. I didnt even provide which version. I gave up, deleted chroot and moved on. Thanks for taking time out of your day to respond . I wasn't meant to program or mess around with them . Feeling much better Cheers !

You can try again with normal PC hardware. You will have better results.

Installing a crouton chroot isn't that hard. Read the instructions at the crouton source. There is also a lot of help on the Google+ crouton communityh, probably more than you'll get here, because it's about crouton, not Linux in general. I ran a crouton chroot on my chromebox for a long time, but I finally gave up and just installed Debian in place of ChromeOS. Works great.

But you have to remember that Linux is not Windows, and that's a feature, not a bug. You do things differently in Linux, especially installing software.
