Help Me Install Linux
 

I am trying to install Red Hat Linux 8. When I get upto the partitioning part of the installation I get an error message 'Could not allocate requested partitions:
partitioning failed: Could not allocate requested partitions'

I have windows 98 installed and have never partitioned my hard drive before. Can you please tell me how to fix this problem

Please note: I know nothing of linux (which is why i'm installing it)
I will format my hard drive if need be.

I would also like to have that GRUB or whatever it's called come up when I've installed linux and I would like to start it up from entering a floppy disk. Can you please help me!!! I am a :newbie:

i just did a dual boot of redhat 9 and xp

i used partitionmagic http://www.symantec.com/partitionmagic/index.html to partition my hdd. i would stay clear of the 'install another operating system' wizard and bootmagic. this page, http://www.powerquest.com/support/primus/id3983.cfm has easy to follow instructions.

do i have to pay for this software or can i get a free version or a trail beacuase i would only use it a few times.

Hello king_scott_2, I am also a newbie to this amazing operating system, to be safe
do the spadework, read as much as you can about the preparation, prior to attempting
an installation. I borrowed a copy of Partition Magic from the local library and several
books some of which contained versions of REDHAT. I did not use these disks for my
installation, I downloaded the three programs using IE not Netscape (as it can change
some items that would produce a faulty boot disk) after saving to Hard drive I then used
Nero burning software to copy an image file to disk. During the installation you will be
given the opportunity to create a boot floppy, I think it is a good idea to use this chance.
The boot loader Grub is included so after the installation there is no problem getting
back to windows if you ever want to go back to windows!!!!!!!!!!! I had plenty of disk
space for the installation, but if you are limited to install a full package plus the updates
after installation you need approx 3.3 GB and then some more for workspace.
Hope some of this info helps. If you run into any trouble there are many people on
this site to help, that is as long as you have access to another computer.

I found PartititionMagic on Kazaa. I now have linux red hat 8. Now my modem won't work in kazaa :(

And for that movie on Partition Magic. That was a life saver

Hello king_scott_2, well you seem to be making progress, the most
important part is good preparation, write down somewhere all your
gateways and ip addresses including subnet mask you are presently
using these will be required when you configure the eth0 and the ppp0
for your network connections. I myself had several problems with the
configuration. Like everything there is always a way to solve the problem.

and then go to the manuals.
All the best for now, just read as much as you can before you start
and you will find the installation will go smoothly.

Do you mean your modem won't work in RH8?

If so, is it a dial up modem? If it is, you might be out of luck, as it might be a so called "win modem" that will only work in windows unless you do a good deal of work and even then sometimes it won't. Here is a list of modems and whether they work in linux, or not.

Sorry, I posted that at 12 in the morning. Yeah my modem won't work in linux. I wish it wern't so. It shows as a device in the PCI settings or something like that

Hello king_scott_2, sorry I misunderstood, I did not realiize you have already
RH8 installed. Before adjusting or making any changes try the network
configuration wizard before you say the modem is not recognized.

Using the wizard is easy if you have all the input information.

If you use the previous hyperlink for Redhat manuals and read Chapter 5
you will find it most enlightening.

What kind of modem do you have? Do you happen to
know what a winmodem is? Their are ways of getting a
winmodem to work in linux but you need to know exactly what kind of modem you have including it's chipset which can be found out by using a tool called
listmodem. But first things first. What kind of modem do you have? If I can help I will.
