I've been new to Linux for about 10 years now.
Meaning for years, I keep trying Linux, get frustrated, and give up. But... I installed Ubuntu over six months ago and was amazed at how effortless it is. Pretty much no problems at all - a few glitches easily corrected. I can personally recommend Ubuntu, but I've also heard Open SUSE is great for beginners as well and plan to trying it on a new partition sometime soon.
Good luck.
