:confused: How can I make a seperate partition on my hard drive while I still run windows xp pro, it is a 80gig sata and I get problems when trying to partition for linux.:confused:

make sure you de-fragment the drive, so there are not pieces at the end of the partition.

Then you can either use some windows software like partition magic, or something like fdisk/qtparted etc. to resize and create new partitions.

Most distros have these tools as part of the installation

Especially if you need to re-size the Windows partition, be sure to backup important data first.

To resize, first de-fragment the partition. You can re-size with any number of tools.

Suggestions;
  • Leave empty (unpartioned) space on the drive for later additions. e.g. maybe 15GB for Windows, 10GB for Linux, and the rest empty.
  • Consider also adding a FAT32 partition for shared data.
