Help installing Ubuntu 7.10

Hey everyone, a real Linux newbie hear. This is my first try at installing Linux. Im trying to install the Ubuntu 7.1 desktop i386 to my new PC. It has an empty HD and a AMD phenom, with 2gig of RAM. Im sure I burned the iso correctly (Is this the right version for my pc?), the trouble is during the installation. On the first menu I choose the first option to imstal Ubuntu, and a loading bar comes up. When it's finished loading, a black screen appears, and says Checking battery status and Running local boot scripts. It says they are OK, but I am at a loss at this part. I can enter text, but no commands seem to work. Am I just typing the wrong thing or is something else the matter? I'm sorry if this is a stupid question with an obvious answer, but I don't know what to do. I have searched the internet and found nothing. Please help!

Have you let your computer run after the point that you described. That is fairly typical for a linux boot up process, and LiveCd's (your ubuntu installer cd is a live cd) will run VERY slowly. Try waiting, if it does not bring up a graphic environment or produce any other output, then you likely have a disk that had errors (this might have nothing to do with the way your burned it, the errors could have occurred during the download process)

I left my pc on for about 1 hour (still on) at that screen. Nothing is happening. I verified the MD5sum, and that was right, before and after burning. The disc check on the Ubuntu main menu also came up clean. Is there any way it could be the wrong copy for my pc? Thanks for the quick reply.

The i386 disk should work for any pc that doesn't have PPC processor in it.
Exactly what does it do and where does it stop working?

it gets to the screen after the bars disappear. It says something about startup scripts and that they are ok. I can type stuff but dont know what to type. No commands seem to work.

Will you post more information about your hardware, and main thing I'm interesting in is your processor bit rate,32 or 64?

Dan101 02-26-2008 05:25 PM

im pretty sure it's 64.... its AMD64 (i think) so i assume that means its 64. its got 256mb graphics if that helps any .....

Yes,that is what I was thinking it is,ok,this is the link for download of AMD64 version of Ubuntu http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/ubun...ktop-amd64.iso and this is the page you wanna check out http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=368607 so you can learn something about i386 and AMD64.Post your results.

I will try this out.... I heard it isn't possible to run certain software on 64bit. Is it possible to run 32bit Ubuntu on a 64bit processor? I would rather be running 32bit. Thanks for the help.

What software are you wanting to run that you've heard won't run on 64bit?

In my experience, some hardware won't take a 32 bit system install. I couldn't get the 32bit Ubuntu to install on my AMD64 system. Downloaded the AMD64 version of Ubuntu and installed that. All 32bit apps that I want to run on my system do so.

Cheers
Chris
