did you use the lowmem.i from the install cd?

I would have expected it to use the rootfs on the cd

now it's looking for a rootfs on a floppy.

ok dude here it is, this is going to work

use your top secret boot loader program as you did to begin with

boot the slack 8.1 cdrom

at the boot prompt type this

/kernels/lowmem.i/zImage

good luck

No you cannot do that, you must boot the slackware cd like you did before

i used a program suggested in another thread which worked fine. It booted into the Slackware 8.1 cd and at the boot: prompt i tried just hitting enter

do the same thing, instead of hitting enter

type this

/kernels/lowmem.i/zImage

then hit enter

It will work

it really looks like a cd disk error or maybe the cdrom drive

but hey your getting closer

how about dos, you have that?
if you can get zipslack -- 37 MB download, it installs on dos / windows
once you get it running you can build it up by installing the packages on the 8.1 cdrom

the first thing you want to do is convert it to ext3 linux filesystem

here is what I would do

install dos or windows one a small partition, leave some free space

create a fat partition for zipslack make it at least 128 MB but not much more -- you can use the partition for a swap partition later.

install zipslack to the 128MB partitioin , create your system partitions using zipslack

then just copy the linux folders over, install lilo

then you can go with the 8.1 packages

the other thing is to go with the floppy filesystem you made

the cd docs claim it will work

try lomem.i on the floppy, at boot type

lowmem.i as you did before with the rootdisks

but this time add init=/bin/bash

or /bin/sh if /bin/bash don't work

hard drive maybe.

I have an old 2.4 gb seagate that works fine with windows, and older versions of linux (2.2.17) but anything newer (2.4.18) wont work errors out on install, or boot (if i do get it installed pc will freeze loading o/s)

tried the same cds on another drive and install no problem.

Cant find anything physically wrong with the 2.4gb but just wont work with newer linux kernal...
