help installing Phat Linux 4.0

I finally decided to install linux and see what everyone was talking about. Through a few friends, online websites and other misc sources pointed to Phat Linux as being the eastest linux to install and use on a windows machine.

I downloaded and followed the very short readme.txt found inside.

And belive it or not. it was extremely simple. everything installed, rebooted a few times, setup my root and began the hardware configuration.

1) when it tries to detect/config my linksys NIC card, the screen goes black, and just idles. I let it do this for 10 minutes. nothing. tried this a few times.

2) when it tries to detect/config my ati all-in-wonder 3d card. it runs a few things then ejects my cdrom and asks for,
"cd 1 installation cd (x86)"
wth is this? phat didnt come with a iso, nor a cd, it was a complete .img file, nothing more. I thought maybe it was asking for my ati cd. i put it in and closed the door and continued. failed, it ejects the cd and prompts the same msg.

now this is where im at. if i skip these 2, or ignore them, i get to the console, log in and im good to go on standard linux.

but i am going to need a window manager, and internet.
sigh, any help would be greatful.

1) this might actually need some bootup parameters (append line) in /etc/lilo.conf with stuff like base-io address, irq etc.
2)any errors in the logs from the installer? or in verbose install mode? (I don't have Phat Linux so I'm guessing here)

I'm not sure how long ago you posted...
I installed Phat Linux a couple of weeks or so ago. I went on to install RedHat 7.3 which is somewhat easier to use (speaking as a total newbie).
However, Phat has better vid card support then RedHat7.3 (I'm not up to recompiling the kernel just yet), I get 1024x768 off an old ATI Mach64 1MB on board, whereas the G-Force2 GPU chip in my mobo is not supported. Sound also appears to be very quiet but present.
One problem is the apparent refusal of the OS to accept the mount/umount commands. Disks either spin-up and are recognised or don't work at all. I tried adding lines to the /etc/fstab file but that caused errors in the boot sequence.
What i have discovered is that if Phat is on a FAT32 partition and you have a second OS (WINxx) then you can copy rpm's to the partition that Phat is one and find the folders in the /initrd/dos/ directory. As long you are logged in as root then you can install the rpm's from the filemanager (it seems that when logged in as user that the file manager wont let you acces the software manager).

Dont' know if any of this helps.

For those who are curious...
Phat Linux is Mandrake 8.
