Help installing open source version of linux
 

I have an open source version of linux from 1994, I have no clue how to install it please help. :)

They're all open source, my friend. At least, the ones that matter.

Why bother with an old out of date version when you can download and install a brand spanking new version?

Check out RedHat, SuSe, Mandrake, and Debian. They all offer free downloads. And if you have 50-100 bucks lying around not doing anything, go out and buy one of these, and get all the manual you can stuff in your brain!

if you got a fast download and burner.. you can get all the latest distro's of your choice at www.linuxiso.org , or you can get them at each distro's site...

The problem is that i'm only 13 and have no way of income to buy a box set.:(

well if you can't download, you can buy burnt cd's onlnie for only a few dollars.

still think it's kinda unhealthy a 13yr old using computers too much.. mind you i did i guess.

Pardon me, but I'm kinda curious as to what you've got. Only a few distros have been around since '94. Which one is it?

Also, what's the specs on the computer you want to put this on, and do you have to keep another operating system on it as well?

Probably one of the book CDs like "Linux Universe" or some such. Weren't many distros out in those days. Also could have been a Walnut Creek or InfoMagic CD set.

I'm looking at an InfoMagic Linux Developers Resource CD dated 1995 and it has Slackware 2.3 with a 1.2.8 kernel with the ELF beta; and the Red Hat Mother's Day release +0.1. I've also got a Walnut Creek Slackware 3.0 dated October 1995. It has kernels 1.2.13 and 1.3.18, XFree 3.1.2, gcc 2.7.0, and emacs 19.29.

Chances are that a distro that old won't run on current hardware.

Oops... I looked at the wrong message to pick up the location of the poster. microkid88, since you didn't show a location, try using Google and search for your city and LUG (linux user group) and you will probably find one close. Contact them and I guarantee that someone there will either give you a current CD for free or at max the cost of a blank.

I've got Slack 1.0 somewhere. It installed to a UMSDOS 'partition'. When I find it I might try to install it under plex, or something, to see just how far we've come.

Hey Thymox, if you've got a public FTP somewhere you could put that up... I'd kill for that. I've got an old 386 around here that's dumb enough to handle it. Or, is there a site around I haven't seen that has good old Linux arcana distros? Sourceforge and most of the distro sites only go back to the early 2.0-ish days.

Oh, and m'88. If none of the above options work, you may want to look into a good last resort: public libraries. They tend to carry Linux books (the ones that came with a CD in the back), and probably have the CD back somewhere behind the desk as a separate check-out.

I'd hazard to go into my own closet these days. I guess my old 386sx will just have to hold up the printer a little longer while I poke around for some ancient distro to put on it.

Why do you want an old distro? The RH ones are all 'optimized' for i386.

hehe... I wish I could have started learning Java at 13; but then again the junior-high computer class consisted of learning how to type on an Apple II.
