Help installing nvidia driver

Hello everyone, I need help regarding installing the nvidia linux driver. I have it downloaded, and when I execute the binary in konsole, it says it can't install because it needs to be run under root. Now, I can't login as root, nor can I sudo the file, because apparently I don't have the permissions necessary to act as sudo, my username doesn't have the permissions necessary.
So, how do I enable either root or sudo access? And, is their a nonbinary nvidia driver for Mandriva (.rpm format?)? Also, should I install a different monitor before or after the installation, as this 13" screen is just too small?
Thank you for the help.
I also have kubuntu laying around, or something similar (Linuxmint). But, its the old feisty edition, I have the 7.10 version at school.

You can login as single user, if you have physical access to the box, and then change the root password.

Why are you trying to change the driver? Is there a problem with the default driver? The rpm is probably O.K., but sometimes you have to compile form source, or src.rpm.

What I ended up doing is installing Kubuntu, I was able to find my 7.10 version discs, and the install went great. It was Mandriva 2007 Spring Free Edition.
I was just trying to get OpenGL to work at its best speed possible. I just need to find more RAM, and I'll have a nice backup computer.
Thanks for the help, anyways.

Next time if you want proprietary drivers with Mandriva, it is better to install Mandriva One.
