Help installing linux
 

Hello all!
I am new to this comunity and to Linux.

Here are my questions:
I have a 40gb hard disk with two partitions: c: and d:.
c: is the primary and d: has 2gb, both of them are NTFS.
I want to install Linux but I need to know:
Is 2gb enough for Linux?
I have Partition Magic and I want to format d: to install Linux. By formating d: into a Linux partition, won't it affect c:? What are the chances of losing data?
Anyone can help me with that?

Ideally youd want more than 2 gigs for a typicall Linux install - an average installl might be around 2-3 gigs but then you need space for data, files etc etc on top of that . - With Mandrake 9.1 for example it is possible to have a nice install with about 1.3 gigs, this would only leave you 700 mbs - you could get a flavour of Linux from this, but ideally youd want more space.

It's not to bad to install. You may want to take the advise from Skyline though. 4 or 5 Gbs would be better. My install takes almost 4Gbs. I put everything but the kitchen sink on though.

One idea would be to delete the 2 gig "d" partition then resize the "c" partition to make it smaller - thus leaving considerably more free space at the end of your drive for a Linux distribution - make sure if you do decide to resize your "c" partition you back up any data etc first, just in case of any problems - What disribution are you thinking of installing?

I have downloaded Conectiva already, what do you say about Conectiva? Is it good?
