Help installing kernel source
 

greetings, everyone.

being a newbie, i'm trying my best not to waste anyone's time, and i've scoured the forums for an answer to my question, but with lady luck not smiling upon me...

i used to work intermittently with linux about eight years, and have just recently gotten back into the practice (w/ mandrake 9.2), but i feel as though i'm nearly starting from scratch.

i'm running an h-p ze4560 with an integrated broadcom 54g wireless adapter. i know the steps that need to be taken to get the adapter running, but there is one critical snag that i just can't figure out...

i would appreciate it if anyone could give me clear step-by-step instructions on how to install the kernel sources in mandrake 9.2 necessary to use ndiswrapper. please feel free to treat me like a five-year-old; condescension would actually be appreciated on this one. :)

hi jmp875, welcome to lq. take a look in mandrake control center, you are looking for the package manager, or software manager, (i'm working from memory here so bear w/me.) once you find it you'll want to select an option, i believe it is at the top of the window in view, top left, if i remember correctly, to show all available packages not installed. kernel source should be in that list. select it and choose to install the package. urpmi will probably pop up and say something like, "the following packages will be installed" that's just mdk taking care of dependencies. after that you should be prompted for cd1 i believe. pop it in and all should be well. hope this is not to vague, it's all i can remember.

i am in your debt for your assistance. things have come a long way since 1996. now that you've shown me the light, i'm impressed with how user-friendly the linux distributions have become.

If you are using the download version of mandrake 9.2 (and I think the boxed stuff also, but not sure) you probably dont have kernel source included on the installation cd's. Something about not having enough room on the disks for it. Sounds kind of bogus to me but anywho I had to download the kernel source for my mandy 9.2 download edition.
For me it was linux-2.4.22-10mdk. But check yours to be sure.
When you are searching for kernel source with package manager you will stumble apon several kernels, but they are most likly pre compiled for specific installations.
Like I said , not sure about boxed or "official" releases, only pretty sure about the download version.
