initscripts is the list of scripts that the computer has to boot up with like /etc/rc.d/rc0.d /etc/rc.d/rc3.d /etc/rc.d/rc5.d etc etc
mostly likely if your problem is with samba it has nothing do with initscripts except for starting it and shutting it down.
it more likely a samba problem.

thanks for responding. I have just installed SUSE 8.0 then trying to configure Samba 2.2.3a but

# smbclient -U% -L localhost

produced the error: error connecting to 127.0.0.1:139 (Connection refused)

I tried http://localhost:901

cannot connect to 901

the when i tried: to verify if rpm is installed i got:

initscripts not installed.

How do i resolve this pls.

Thanks

rpm -q initscripts
is how you find out if the package is installed
if its not
then you can go to suses home page
click home users, download
and download the package from there
to install it type
rpm -ivh initscripts*.rpm
or replace with the exact name of the package
you could also do a find on the cd of suse
by type this at the root of the cdrom
find /location -name initscript* -print
remember /location is where your cdrom is ie /mnt/cdrom or what ever it is
