Help Installation Dual Boot Wubi / Dead CD/DVD Drive / USB not available boot de
 

Anyone help please.

I have my old laptop TravelMate 2413NLMi 1GB RAM. My Cd drive works not well on most of the CDs. I don't know how it picks Win2K3 cd but in that also it gives problem. After some break it picks it up.

Installed win 2K3 server successfully from CD Drive. That Cd is old and very good quality. Later I downloaded ubuntu iso 32 /64 both when I heard about dual boot via wubi. I wrote the ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386 iso on 2 CDs with fastest and slowest speed both on my new laptop but that Cds not worked in the old laptop cd drive. Also my laptop not support USB as boot device in boot sequence. So USB install via usb creator cannot work. I also verified that Iso are fine by installing on someoneelse's desktop PC. Those cds work well there.

Back to my laptop:

Then I copied all Cd content in a folder on desktop of Win2K3 with the help of my new laptop CD drive and usb drive I have.

I run the Wubi on the desktop of Win2k3. It run successfully and in the end asked me to reboot. I rebooted.

I got the 'Ubuntu' option on booting. I selected and came into it. After that ubuntu splash screen came and then following message displayed on screen

THE ERROR:
mount: mounting /dev/loop1 on //filesystem.squashfs failed: Input/Output error

I got it this is due to the dead/faulty cd drive which ubuntu not able to mount.

Now tell me how to install ubuntu further with the UI.

Is there some special command to do this going in Grub pressing 'ESC'
because the already specified modes have some commands on pressing 'e' there.
Some way if I can use iso in that environment copying from USB. I need commands for that.

Please help friends. I want to see ubuntu in action. I used lot of my bandwidth to download this iso files but still not able to see it in action.

Give me some idea and commands. I am a linux begineer not a daily user.

If your laptop supports boot from usb al you have to do is change it in bios.
in my bios I have to click on hdd and it expands to show the different drives.

GRUB command is required

That is the problem. I have old laptop on which I am installing. There is no way in bios to boot from USB The only way I can do within Grub as it allows to give commands for linux boot.

If that can be done then only possible to do. Please forward it to other who know more about GRUB.

New laptop have all options and I know it will work there. but I want to install it on my old laptop. So please help

maybe it might support network boot.

There was another party this week on LQ that installed os by taking drive out and installing to drive. I'll have to go thru subscribed threads. Are you trying to install to hdd?

I describe how I am installing

My hard disk 40MB.

Windows 2003 server installed there.
In Windows 2003 server environment I copied CD content on desktop in a folder with help of my other laptop CD drive and USB stick

In this folder I ran Wubi the dual boot installer. This installer make a virtual disk in Windows disk by making a big file.

That application ran completely. Even after reboot I see the Ubuntu option in the Selection menu.

Here I when select ubuntu then the error of missing Cd/Drive comes and it won't install further.
Here also pressing 'esc' I can come to grub utility and there are several modes there.

So this is whole situation.

I will also try the link you have given abd let you know a update on this.

Ubuntu version I am installing is latest 10.xxx

I am not installing creating original linux HD partitions the swap and boot partition. Because that way it not possible to start installer since CD drive is not available. I have to go by wubi methods which runs in windows environment.

I am not able to get desktop after wubi completes and in dual boot option for ubuntu is there and I select the same.

Did you insert cd?
Maybe it would've extracted installer instead of fully booting cd.

I checked out the first 2 of your wubi links, are you able to boot wins still?
If you can still boot wins start from scratch, reinstall wubi and let it download ubuntu then you don't have to worry about anything.

That is why I never say to use wubi. It fails on newbies.

The reason you cd's fail is your old drive. Either it was never made to read burned cd's or your burner is off a bit or you are burning on cheap cd's and burning too fast.

Try the black cd's and burn at slowest speed you can. The black cd's have never failed me. Burning at slowest speed never hurts and many cases fixes how old readers work. They don't like the way the new burners cheat.
