Help install a File Manager (FM)

I am using Debian Etch.
I uninstalled nautilus yesterday and tried to put xfe on my GNOME with metacity. Unfortunately after removing nautilus xfe doesn't start. I haven't made any changes to the configuration to make it start - I thought it starts automatically. If it doesn't (which I think is quite obvoius) can you please tell me what I must do to make it work.

I remember I once tried to swap Nautilus out for Thunar, but it got so discouraging, I just left Nautilus where it was. I ended up having to delve into Gnome's deeper settings which have a "regedit" feel about them, with Gconf.
