Help in installing xampp

I am using Ubuntu. While installing Xampp in phpmyadmin i changed the password for root. But now phpmyadmin is not opening. It says

MySQL said: Documentation
Cannot connect: invalid settings.
phpMyAdmin tried to connect to the MySQL server, and the server rejected the connection. You should check the host, username and password in your configuration and make sure that they correspond to the information given by the administrator of the MySQL server.
Please help me in restoring original settings. thanks

Did you set a different root password for phpmyadmin and mysql? That sounds like phpmyadmin is trying to gain access to a MySQL table to verify that your pw is valid and it can't get to it. Maybe your MySQL server isn't running?
