BUT...without tech support I'm feeling the need to return to windows. Please somebody save me

Here's one recent and pressing example: I have been watching TV episodes for months via Hulu (as I have no regular TV) and just today when I logged in to watch the latest episode of Brothers and Sisters....no can do. And I get this message

Express install is not supported on this operating system. To upgrade please visit: Flash Player Download Center.PS

At the site I get this: Adobe Flash Player version 10.0.42.34 Linux and then a drop down menu with the following choices

YUM for linux
.tar.gz for linus
rpm for linux
.deb for Ubuntu 8.04+
APT for Ubuntu 9.04+

I recently ran my linux updates and restarted and nothing...and I don't know what version of Ubuntu I have nor how to tell....

I would so love some help....but with the full knowledge that all I have as Quid pro quo...will be a non-technical offering....perhaps literary, a recommendation for a good restaurant on one of several continents or perhaps some political advise.

PS Repeat, I've been successfully watching from Hulu for months. So what happened, happened in the past few days. Hulu has new requirements etc>

And making this even more urgent....Jon Stewart resumes NEW Daily Show episodes and I can't get them.

I haven't used Ubuntu in awhile, so hopefully this is relevant advice..

Open up a terminal and run the command:
cat /etc/issue

That should tell you the Ubuntu release you're using. Armed with that info, visit the flash site you mentioned and download the appropriate package (i.e. the one that matches your Ubuntu version). Once it's on your desktop, I believe Ubuntu will let you double click on it to install (which will fire up Synaptic, IIRC).

I ran into the same issue today.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04.3 and Firefox 3.0.16. Adobe Flash player 9.0 was installed previously, but upgrading to 10.0.42.34 did not immediately help. When I typed aboutlugins in Firefox, it showed that the Firefox was not recognizing the newer version for some reason.

I found this link that helped out. If upgrading to 10.0.42.34 does not immediately help, then try this (assuming you're running 8.04):

I'm now able to view Hulu videos again.

I'm on the case....I do have 8.04 installed and I've downloaded the upgraded flashplayer...a couple of times I think as it's now telling me that I already have it. I've never worked from the terminal before and don't quite no how to follow the directions on the link you gave me...it seems I need to remove the Flash 9 plugin..but i can't figure out how to see if I have it or how to remove it...or for that matter see that the updated version is correctly installed....

I'm having a little Hulu withdrawal at the moment and getting very frustrated....so know that I appreciate your patience....this isn't my medium.

One way to check the Flash version would be to bring up Firefox, then type about : plugins into the address bar just like they show in the instructions from the link and look for Shockwave Flash. Note that you do not put spaces between about, : and plugins. I did that to avoid getting the emoticon substituted in.

As far as running from the terminal, just type in the command exactly as they show and hit return. The exception being you will need to substitute your own directory path where the .deb file was saved to. In their example, they stored it under /home/falko/Desktop. Yours will most likely be saved to /home/<your user account>/Desktop. Also, when you run a command that starts with "sudo", you should initially get prompted for your password in order to run the command.

Hopefully this will get you further along.

To the OP: Did you get this figured out? There are good instructions at [1] that fixed the problem for me after I added a simple step.

I too feel your pain; my capability to view Hulu video recently went away too. I am running Centos 5.4 x86-64 with Firefox/Linux 64bit Flash The funny thing is; other non-Hulu video still works fine for me and even Hulu video embedded in other webpages (like ATT.net) will work for me. Weird; the problem seems to be limited to when you watch video directly from the main Hulu website. Seems to imply (maybe?) it's a Hulu website issue.

It's definitely not really a Hulu issue, it's just because they started using some Flash feature or imposing a requirement that other sites aren't. Check out the link on the Ubuntu forum, it will almost undoubtedly resolve this issue for most people.

Nothing on the Ubuntu Forum seems to apply to my problem. What's got me confused is that I CAN stream Hulu videos that are embedded in other webpages, but I CAN'T stream Hulu videos straight off of Hulu's own webpage

I'm running an up-to-date Arch install on two machines and this happened to me too. I can play video via the official Linux Hulu Desktop app (check it out, if it would help), but not straight from the homepage. I can't do it on either of my Arch Linux machines.

Nothing mentioned above has helped me either.

I tried to load the Linux Hulu Desktop app but I have a dependency problem with Centos 5.4 (needs libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.7). Others must be having our same Hulu viewing problem so maybe we'll eventually get some help.

rkmason, I think your problem is just that you're using the 64bit Flash, for which I don't believe an updated version has been put out by Adobe. You'll need to either wait for that or switch to the latest 32bit version (which may require working around the package managers, as discussed on the linked Ubuntu thread). I think Hulu playback from other sites works because their core video delivery didn't change, but they did something to the advertisement playback and setup on their site that requires the updated Flash version.

Try switching to the 32 bit version and see if it fixes the problem.

tjlopena, that makes sense. Was there a recent 32bit Flash update that was required to make Hulu work correctly? FYI, I have been trying out a Ubuntu 9.10 install that does allow Hulu video to work correctly. Since Ubuntu 9.10 is a 32bit OS (newer 2.6.31 kernel / Firefox 3.5.7) I don't know how the 64bit Linux and current version 32bit Flash plugins compare.

My limited understanding is that there was a pretty recent Flash update, which had yet been published for 64 bit last time I checked. I don't know how the different versions compare, but heard the updates are fairly substantial. Hulu must have started using one of the new features or something. The discussion on the Ubuntu forum is basically about people having trouble getting the update for the 32bit through the package manager. The 9.10 version probably has that set up correctly, so it makes sense that it works for you (I haven't tried on my 9.10 machine, but had issues on my laptop).

After trying a test install of Ubuntu 9.10 over the weekend I just replaced my primary workstation Centos 5.4 OS with it. The Adobe Flash plugin (10.0 r42) installed fine for me and all is right with the world now. All streaming video sources including the Hulu website now work fine for me. It's a little off-topic for this thread, but I have to say I am mightily impressed with Ubuntu 9.10. I have run various RedHat/RHEL versions beginning with RedHat 6.2 up to RHEL 4.x and then Centos 5.x. I also tried various Fedora versions but they were all too experimental and buggy for me. I stuck with RHEL and Centos OS versions for the stability they provided, but the downside of that stability is getting locked out of using some applications that require more recent kernel levels. I'm hopeful that using Ubuntu will keep me closer to the most recent kernel levels without it becoming a buggy sandbox. The only obvious thing I give up is running a 64bit type OS, and I'm not sure it really makes too much difference for me. I also now have a WinXP vm running great under VirtualBox (better than WinXP under KVM on Centos 5.4).

Ubuntu 9.10 just seems to be a better balance of up-to-date kernel & OS stability for my taste.
