first you untar them:

$ tar -zxvf filename.tar.gz

then that makes a new directory with the name of the file. so you change to that directory (cd filename), and follow the directions in the INSTALL file, which usually tells you to do something like:

$ ./configure
$ make
# make install

($ = as user, # = as root)

have fun

ok, i unTARed the file, then using the FAQ on the website i tryewd to install the program, it says to use the command './amsn' or 'wish amsn' noth they both bring back an error msg...

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

Application initialization failed: this isn't a Tk applicationcouldn't connect to display ":0.0"
Error in startup script: invalid command name "option"
while executing
"option add *NoteBook.Label.$opt $val 30"
("foreach" body line 2)
invoked from within
"foreach {opt val} {
highlightThickness 0
borderWidth 0
relief raised
padX 3
padY ..."
(in namespace eval "::notebook" script line 7)
invoked from within
"namespace eval notebook {

if { $initialize_amsn == 1 } {
# Start by configuring the "compiled-in" default for the label to
# look like the comp..."
(file "./notebook.tcl" line 3)
invoked from within
"source [file join $program_dir notebook.tcl] "
(procedure "reload_files" line 7)
invoked from within
"reload_files"
(file "./amsn" line 177)

any idea of a way to get past this problem?
cheers SamJ

i think you probably need tcl/tk, linked to in the FAQ:
http://amsn.sourceforge.net/modules.php?name=FAQ

it says you don't need to compile anything, just untar and if you have the requirements (ie., tcl/tk) it's ready to run.
