I really like pclos but no sound is not good enough. I'm thinking of trying ubuntu before being sucked back to into microsoft. Any help would be appreciated.

hi

now if you like to try ubuntu...it uses a sound server called pulseaudio....and its based on Debian

but here are a number of pages..with screen shots that will help you solve your issues

your issues can be summarised into

bios
firmware
hardware is failing...not connected properly etc
sound configs wrong
mixer muted
mixer volume too low

try the master page
http://sidux.com/index.php?module=Wi...ag=SoundMaster

and pay attention to various checks pls
http://sidux.com/index.php?module=Wikula&tag=NoSound

some of those commands won't work for you so just tell us what you see but post the outputs all inside a code box

good luck

thanks everybody for your time. i have put xp back on this computer and within 3 short hours i have a fully functioning pc up and running. I have spent about six weeks struggling with linux and still not fully functioning. it is clearly not the right time for me to be linuxing as i have a really busy life and i simply want to use a working computer. i hope to be back with linux sometime in the future. thanks again
