Help Getting started

I'm a netowrk admin, but have no clue at linux (flame suit on)

So...

I have a dedicated server.. redhat running.. that's it...

I've set up the firewall.. allowing web and ftp.. and ssh...
I installed vnc so i can actually get to it.. cause i decided typing in ssh is not for me...

but now i cant get to vnc... it is running... but i cant connect...

so the question.. what fricking ports.. well i think it's 5900 tp 5902...

so where do i add these ports to pass them through in tehbuilt in redhat firewall...

cansome one help me please... I'm lost... i've been up all night and i'm off to bed... LOL

i can connect to ssh i can verify it is runnign but it says it cant connect (vnc)

any ideas, what files to add ports to..
A better firewall???

when i connect to it in ssh.. just fine...
run "setup" and check no firewall... then quit and "reboot now"

it reboots...

i ssh in type "vncserver" it says "vncserver:1" confimrs it started it...

but when i try to connect via my windows machine i get a cannot connect error...

it's lve on dual t-1's... not the ip i'm at now... sorry :D

anyone...?

I'm off to bed... done for the night.. (well day now)

lol yes you are good at replying to yourself lol.

the command to start x is believe it or not startx lol you may have to type kde or gnome after that

reddog64 04-18-2004 05:44 PM

when i do "startx" this is what i get... ideas???

[root@linuxbox root]# startx

do you have more than one video card? if so switch to the other video card (switch the BIOS too so that u can still get th ecommand prompt). if not run the command

xf86config

that is a program that will resetup your x window system...you have to know a bit about your monitor and your mouse and your video card and such. run the command

SuperProbe

too find out about your video card. I think you must be root. after that try startx
d

reddog64 04-18-2004 06:45 PM

no it's a radeon 7000 it's fine.. if i sit at teh terminal it starts fine... thatis i turn the box on and it's in xwindows....

but when i vnc it goes to a grey screen with a box... but the cursor is the x cursor...
how do i change it to gnome then or kde?

try xwmconfig before u start x if that isnt a command try switchdesk gnome (or kde)

reddog64 04-18-2004 09:29 PM

i edited a line in teh xstartup to gnome? and now it works... but we did other stuff.. so i'm slowly adding security to it to see where it kill it..
