It appears that I have upset linux users by not putting the correct terminolgy for my query, I can explain. As an old person i know nothing about computors, i guess this is where the trouble lies. I use a wireless hub and can connect via windows XP to the net. I have ubuntu 11.04 on a seperate hard drive, when i load Ubuntu it makes a connection to the hub but then when i try to connect to the web using firefox, it keeps telling me it cannot find server. If anyone can give a few suggestions it would be appreciated.Softly does it everyone it takes a little to sink in, i dont understang the terms you use ( ping etc )
with thanks john.

First of all, use descriptive titles in your posts and don't use urgent. It's only urgent to you and not to us who are all volunteers here at LQ, helping out in our free time. Did you confirm that you have a working internet connection? Can you open a terminal and ping for example 8.8.8.8 (Google's DNS). How do you connect to internet? Dialup, ADSL, cable? And do you use a wired or wireless connection?
Looking forward to your participation in the forums. Have fun with Linux.
I have many answers but I don't know the question.
What does ifconfig say?
can you ping google.com?
Are you wireless or wire connected?
Urgent as a subject is not a winner. Let people know it's a networking problem.
