What is the error? If it says pppd has died and then a number go to console and type in man pppd and close to the bottom there is a explanation for the error codes. Helps troubleshoot the things.

Hope that helps.

Hello Wardailer,

Please answer the following questions,

External modem, brand name, model, “revision”, Interface (RS-232 or USB)?

Linux, Dialer program?

With kind regards,

Richard

The error code was Exit=16 which means the modem terminated by hanging up. Yes, I know, but WHY is it doing that every 5 minutes???

My modem type as follows:

US Robotics V92/External Modem on Dial-up. Mandrake 9.1 Linux. Using the KPPP dialer to connect to the net. The man pages are a bit silly, because it tells you the explaination of each codes but it does not say why the problem or how to troubleshoot the problem.

Please, if anyone knows then please let me know ASAP. Or else, I may need to go back to Windows using my internal modem, since Mandrake is not compatable with the internal modem.

If anyone knows, then please explain the exact steps on how to solve this issue since Im still a newbie.

In the meantime, I'll start Google searching for this exit status code 16.

When I get that, it is the ISP that is doing the hang up command. You may want to check with your ISP and see if there is something they can tell you. I told mine that I only use Linux but I do get that sometimes though. My ISP actually uses Linux servers so that may help a bit.

Not sure what else to try though.

I could login, thats not the problem, but during when Im on the net it just dies.

Yea me too. I usually can stay on for hours then it gets the hang up command. The ISP said they were having trouble with others, including windoze boxes, so I presume the problem was on their end. It happens rarely now though. I haven't had it to happen in a few weeks now. I did send them the error info though.

It may be a bad modem too, on your end. You could test it with windoze and see what happens. Hardware modems will work with any OS. It's those pesky win modems that require windoze.

wardialer; it maybe a timing config ur end or server end. check ur, as other
responders suggested. as u stated it worked on W without a hitch, config; correctly why not mdk9.1 ! mine works & no problem. at install mdk took over(i let it). may have to tweek it a bit later but satisfied for know.
