Help, drive don't recognize DVD's!
 

Using Ubuntu 10.10, and a Aopen CD/DVD Drive, that when purchased it was suppose to read and write to everything. But my system will not recognize blank DVD-R or RW.
Everything works on the CD's writing/reading. I can play DVD movies, but thats it.

After many searches I found these posts and checked them out without any problem:

I followed the Medibuntu instructions on http://www.medibuntu.org/
and that did not help either.

I purchased four different purchases of DVDs to make sure the problem was not the disks. I had that happen to me a few time with CDs.

I do not get any errors of any kind. The drive light goes on and off like it should.

Have you installed DVD+-RW/R tools? (Those other applications will help with reading DVDs, but I think DVD+-RW/R tools is needed for writing to them.)

I installed everything that this site tells you to install and checked to see if it did in fact happen:

I just checked synaptic and it shows this file:
DVD+-RW/R tools

dvd+rw-tools makes it possible to burn DVD images created by dvdauthor or
genisoimage to DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, and DVD-RW disks, replacing
cdrecord-proDVD in many cases.

The package contains:

* growisofs to burn DVD images or create a data DVD on the fly
* dvd+rw-format to format a DVD+RW
* dvd+rw-mediainfo to give details about DVD disks

and some programs to control the write speed and obtain information from
DVD-RAM.

Are there others that I need to install?

so you can not burn dvd's BUT you can burn cd's on this dvd/cd drive ? right ?

i am assuming ( very bad idea on my part) that you DO have k3b installed ?

one of the 4 buttons on the bottom window in " new dvd project"

John VV, my version of k3b is 2.0.1 and it only has three buttons on the bottom in "new data project", "new audio cd project" and "copy medium".

Clicking on any one of them gets me a request to insert a DVD with the "Burn" button grayed out.

Yes Steelheat, you are correct. The former "New DVD data project" and "New CD data project" have been combined in recent versions of K3b. Do you want to burn a dvd for writing files or do you want to put a dvd image on a blank dvd? If you want to burn a dvd for writing files then place a dvd in your drive and click on New Data Project. It will take a couple of seconds for k3b to detect your medium in the DVD drive. Once it does you should be able to write files to it. If you're burning a dvd image then follow the same procedure but then click on the Tools menu and then on Burn image ... You will then have to navigate to where you have placed your .iso file.

Thank you jdkaye, what I use the most is data project and image on a DVD.
I just re-tried what you suggested here and using both k3b and Brasero. Both have the "burn" button grayed out no matter when I put the dvd in, before I load the program or after I drag files into the program. Any more ideas for me to try?

Two things you can check:
1. Is there a writable disk in your cd drive when you start up K3b?
2. What is the output of this command?
Another thing is that with K3b when you first install it you need to run its routine that gives you (ordinary user) permissions to do the burning. Have you run these routines? It's in the the Settings Menu called "Setup Systems Permissions".
Finally when K3b is running with a disk in the drive, on the Device menu click on "Media Info". Does it recognise that there is a disk present?

A person on another form told me about using the "hwinfo" command, see "Features" below, good for CD-R, CD-RW only. From that I see I got screwed perching this cdrom.

That's true but you got to learn something about analysing problems on your system. That's worth a lot more than a crap CD rom drive. ;)

Not trying to advertise but you can get dvd burner at Fry's for $38 before tax.
