HELP - Display Problems
 

Hi !

I just installed Mandrake 9.0 dual boot with Windows XP. The installation appeared to go without a hitch until I had to select my display preferences. I selected 1168x764 (24-bit), which my graphics card should easily be able to handle (64 MB NVIDIA GForce 4 MX). However, when I boot up and try to load KDE, I cannot get anything on the screen. I get an error saying that the signal is out of range for my monitor (19" Dell FD Trinitron)

Check the monitors manual or the manufacturers web site to get the max resolution and max vert/horiz rates.

Then just open /etc/X11/XF86Config in a text editor and change the settings.

How can I change the display driver that I selected. I wonder if I may have selected the wrong one in error. Please give me idiot proof instructions, as I have no clue how to do things without a GUI. Once I log in and get the bash thing, I am completely lost.

I don't know how to get a text editor to work in the bash thing - I really need a GUI :o) Please help...

You could also try running this as root:

xf86config and answer the questions, it should set everything up for you.

OK...can you tell me how I run it? I really don't know anything about this command line driven stuff.

If you log in as root at the prompt type:

root@localhost root$ xf86config

Unless Mandrake doesn' t install this program then I'm not sure where you would go to.

I think mandrake uses the XFdrake command. (Mandrake users correct me if I'm wrong.) Just type XFdrake at the command line after you've logged in as root. There is a good tutorial here on how to tweak your settings: http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/doc/90c/en/Starter.pdf
