help, cannot get any linux version to work on compaq 6715b laptop

Hi, Can someone please tell me what is the best linux version to put on a compaq 6715b laptop. I've tried mint 12 and ubuntu 11 and feisty fawn (version 7.04) and cannot get any of them to work. bout ready to give up. thanks Update - THANK YOU ALL, to everyone who offered such quick advice, it is a wonderful feeling to know people out there care and are willing to help others so readily. I took the advice from the and installed Ubuntu 8.04 tonight on the hp 6715b and it is working nicely as you can see. :-) this is my first time on linux and it feels great! now on to learning and hopefully contributing someday. Bye

A little more details on what "cannot get any of them to work" means might help. Are you trying to boot a Live CD? Have you booted the LiveCD and the install option fails? At what point? Installing from a flash drive?

Some info on your hardware, processor, RAM & video card would help. Not likely people are going to be familiar with your particular laptop or be willing to search for that information for you.

Are you trying to install a 32-bit or 64-bit OS?

You can also checkout the details and compatibily of linux on your machine, go through this link,
And I think debian based any ditro would work better on your machine.

Be awared that version is out dated and no longer supported. Lots of security holes have been fixed since them and lot of more features in newest releases.
I dont event know if you can upgrade from 8.04 to 10.04 to 12.04 which is the lates. If the new graphical interface is an issue you could try LXDE or E17 with a newer version of Ubuntu or straight Debian which is Ubuntus parent. These user interfaces I mentioned are light weight but really good.

Good luck to you.
