Help, can't load KDE or GNOME?

Ok, I'm very new to this. I install Mandrake 8.1 and made boot disks, and put lilo on the /root (so that I can continue to use windows boot loader).

Install went fine, everything boots, I think.

Problem:
I thought I install the bootload with a graphical interface, and that would boot directly to KDE or GNOME. But I get a text based interface that asks for localhost login, then password. After entering the proper info, I'm logged in, but to a unix prompt style system.

Questions to answer (please):
1) How to I get into KDE or GNOME from this unix prompt?
2) How do I get the graphical interface that Mandrake says is available to come up (the one in the manual that allows me to choose KDE or GNOME at login?
3) How do I get it to perminantly boot to that interface?

Thanks for your help

1.) & 2.) You can type startx to load whatever the default window manager is, or you can type kdm or gdm to load a login chooser that you are asking about.

3.) In order to boot straight into X you want to edit the file /etc/inittab. Login as root and edit the file by typing; pico /etc/inittab and go down a small ways and look for the line that says something to this affect; id:3:initdefault: and change the 3 to a 5. Save it, reboot and there you go.
