Angry Help burning cds?

I'm having difficulty burning cds in linux. I think it may be something to do with how the mounts are set up but I'm not sure.

First I tried KonCD - it gave me an error message every time I tried to copy saying that cdrecord could not be started. When I tried to read tracks off a CD the program crashed.

Next I tried XcdRoast but couldn't even start it as root - no error message nothing.

I then started using KreateCD and had a bit more success. I can copy data off my hard drive and onto CD no problem however still no luck when trying to copy or rip an image. When I look at settings it tells me recordcd is my plextor 16X which is fine but it also has my read cd as the plextor with no option to change to my DVD drive.

Can anyone give me any idea as to where I'm going wrong?

thx

you need to configure the kernel to use the scsi emulation on your ide drives.

usually all you need to do is add the devices to the append line in lilo.conf

like this

hdd=ide-scsi

if you have grub it will go on the kernel line

There is a little bit more to it sometimes.

I spent 2 hours with friendly ops on IRC this week and sorted mine out (still not perfect though). I've not tried burning ISO's nor do I have any plans to at the moment.

I created a page detailing what I went through at

www.monkeez.co.uk/linux/cd-rw.php

Hope that helps.

personally i found a fair few problems.... might want to revise it somewhat, make it more generic (i.e. most peoples inital fstab lines will NOT look like that...) and you change hdc to hdb halfway through, and that append line you "add" is including confusing commands that are not related to cd burning. also step 3 is better defined as an alias, not probeall.

and... why is that page blah.php when you've written pure HTML?

Thanks for the feedback. I'll get on to the changes.

However, some of the technical changes might not be changed - the account is what I went through setting up my cd-rw, so if people's files look different, then this isn't the document for them. I specify that it's for mdk8.2 and what type of cd-rw (although that won't make much of a difference).

However, the unmount error is totally valid (I typed it after being sat on IRC sorting it out for 2 hours approx and it was late).

As for the page being php - I normally use php as an extension to allow later scripting. It shouldn't slow the page down, if there's no content then the php parser won't be involved. So, it's future proofing the page if I decide to include php later on. :-)
