help! a question on compiling linux kernel

hi, all

when I am trying to compile the linux kernel (2.2.16 version), the kernel compiling fails. First, I use the command "make xconfig". Second, I use "make dep" and "make clean". At last, I use the command "make bzImge" to ocmpile the kernel. Unfortunately, it occurs errors. The error message on screen are:

ld -m elf_i386 -r -o mm.o init.o fault.o ioremap.o extable.o
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/2.2.16/arch/i386/mm`
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/2.2.16/arch/i386/mm`
make -C arch/i386/lib
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/2.2.16/arch/i386/lib`
make all_targets
make[2]: Entering directory /usr/src/2.2.16/arch/i386/lib`
gcc -D_KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/2.2.16/include -D__ASSEMBLY__ -traditional -c checksum.S -o checksum.o

checksum.S:231: badly punctuated parameter list in #define
checksum.S:237: badly punctuated parameter list in #define

make[2]: *** [checksum.o] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/2.2.16/arch/i386/lib`
make[1]: ***[first_rule] Error2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/2.2.16/arch/i386/lib`
make: ***[_dir_arch/i386/lib] Error 2

what is the reason? How to solve it?

It sounds like you have a dodgy copy of the kernel source.

2.2.16 is kind of old now. Download the 2.2.21 source from your nearest kernel mirror and try that.

Actually, I have tried the newer version (2.4.16). But the kernel compiling still has the same problem. I seems I make mistakes in kernel configure ( `make xconfig` ). But I don't know where I did wrongly. By the way, I want to configure my linux box as a router.

Check you have the latest version of gcc and nasm
Oh and be sure to selelect right all the components...
if "xconfig" fails better try "make menuconfig"

Hope it helps
