Hi there! If you provide some more information, it will be easier for someone to help you out. Some examples of things to include:

-Distro Name and Version
-Name of application (movie player to me could mean mplayer, xine, etc...)
-Type of file you're trying to play
-Any error messages you are receiving

If you use ubuntu and try to run video files with movie player/totem,you need to install codecs.
Code:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
