Help!

Hi
I am new to Linux and I have installed Mandrake Linux with the KDE desktop as the default. I successfully installed everything just fine and the KDE desktop started up no problem. I then changed my monitor resolution and I was told to log out and back in to change my monitor settings. When I logged out, I came to a command line interface and entered my log in name and password, which I assumed would log me back in, however, it does nothing but leave me at the command line. I did some searching around the net and tried to enter"startkde" and when I do that, some gibberish happens on my screen and then nothing.....please help, what do I do???
Thank you!

PS- If anyone can recommend a book to help my learn, I would appreciate it.

Maybe startx will do the trick. KDE is not what needs to be started, it's the X server that runs KDE, so that should do the trick. Enjoy.

I tried startx and nothing happens. Any other suggestions?

When your enter "startx" nothing happens? There must be some sort of output, error, command not found...!

Where exactly did you change the resolution... In the KDE Control Center. from what resolution to what... If startx is not working try logging in as root...

Login: root
Password: ******
# xorgconfig

This will run the video setup program so you can re-select the correct monitor/video card configuration... Then try "startx" again.

If you continue having problems, gives us some hardware information post your xorg.conf file:

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Good Luck
