first of all .. what the hell is cron besides a timing deamon of some kind?

Yesterday, when i logged into my RH7.0 box with any user other than root, i would get a /etc/null error. something about not having permissions.

Today.. when i logged in.. i still got that error. Then when i logged in as root, I had three emails.. telling me about /etc/null permission errors in cron.daily, cron.monthly and cron.weekly (i think it was monthly.. could have been hourly).

I restarted to see if it would fix the problem. and I get

on just about everything

it then says

***An error occured during the file system check
***Dropping you to a shell the system will reboot
***when you leave the shell
Give root password for maintenence
(or type CONTROL-D fo normal startup)

typing CTRL-D it says the following:
mounting file systems
mount: no such partition found
your computer will reboot

or someting to that affect

what can i do?

Sounds like you have a problem with an incorrectly shutdown system or equivalent.
Try to give the root password for maintenance.
Then run e2fsck on your harddrive. If there are problems then it might fix it.
Also check your partition layout with fdisk to make sure nothing has changed, shouldn't have but you never know.
