Hello, I'm Egbert666 & I have a Compaq E500 Armada

I know, I know, what can I say .....

Thing is, am kind of fed up with M$XP, so now I've installed SUSE 10.0 onit, since that was available.

It is the second time that I've tried to go for Linux (the first effort was quite a few years back) but now I'm determined to stick with it -and most likely ask quite some newbie questions, you asked for it!!-

but remember, if there is any thing I can do -ever- in return, just ask.

The number one question is:
- altough the OS recognizes my videocard ok, (ATI 3D Rage Mobility AGP 2X) it only gets into one resolutionmode (800*600), tried to change that under SaX2 properties -> Resolution, but to no avail!

this is sad .....
& I'm a bit afraid that, if I start tweaking on the settings myself I might smoke the screen, and since that is a TFT by Compaq & I'm a beginner I better not do stupid things.

You can set the resolution on the file xorg.conf under the section called "screens". Make sure you have docs for your display so you know how high it can go. Careful now

Feel free to correct me or add anything.

yesterday I managed to 'crash' it
luckily there exists a shell mode, but the X window is fished, there must be a way to restore all I assume, but will go for the re-install once more, got to learn everything from the beginning right ?

went to the ATI site, downloaded their proposed driver

installed everything by default except could not make the fglrxconfig to work,
then I did /usr/X11R6/bin/aticonfig and changed that to 1024*768
then I rebooted

that was not the best idea! no more Gnome for me

looks like when I first started with Win95, made that crash all the time too! ;-)

Will try again later on today & let you know the result

WOOHOO!!!

re-installed Suse and it works fine now,
got my resolution on 1024/768 just like the screen is designed for

the thing was that under Kde I could modify it (in fact he asked if I would like to change the res.) while the install before I opted for Gnome

interesting

Now got to dig trough these 2 books, basic course suse 10 about the graphical interface + options and Linux in a Nutshell after that and who knows ............ maybe I can flame you then once more and more persistent!!!!

Somthing you said makes me think that you have an LCD flat panel screen, do you? or is it a CRT.

I am under the impression that you can't "smoke" an LCD, and that the CRT would only be damaged if
you left it at a setting that drove the verticle or horizontal at too high a rate for an ammount of time.

I may be wrong, If I am may an expert correct me quicly.

nope, you are right, its a LCD, I managed to choose the right resolution after I re-installed the OS, went for KDE now instead of GNOME and there it was, during the install. procedure it asked for the settings to be changed which I did, its working fine now!
